Since this UPDATE is going out to therapists all over the country , even though this pertains mostly to FL, those of you in other state's may find this as valuable information. It is an example of how health care professionals must always be on top of issues. I hope each of you will stand up and do whatever is necessary to protect your rights and benefits just as we in Florida have been doing this entire year.
Most Florida drivers know by now that FL No-Fault automobile coverage is set to Sunset (END) on October 1st. Should this happen, FL will be the ONLY State in the United States that will not require drivers to carry mandatory coverage of some sort. As a traveler to Florida or one with family members living in Florida this should be of concern to you as well.
However in these final moments there is still hope!!
Because of months of continued work from all interest groups including, Florida State Massage Therapy Association's Executive Board, Members, Attorney & Lobbyists, FL AMTA Chapter Members & Lobbyist, Florida Chiropractic Association's Attorney, Members & Lobbyists, Medical Doctors, Hospitals, ER Physicians, Florida Highway Patrol / Motor Vehicle Divisions, some FL Legislators and Florida policyholders, drivers & potential passengers who stand to lose the most, especially those without other means of medical insurance have all been tirelessly fighting this issue since early spring.
In just the last day or two we have been presented with a couple of drafts for proposed Bills. A Special Session has been called and among other issues, it seems as though PIP will be on the agenda as some legislators finally get it together to try to preserve FL PIP, No-Fault insurance coverage. Even so, it will not take place before October 1st Sunset date. It is no surprise of course, that this will be against the will of State Farm, Allstate and a few other major insurers who have done everything they can to end No-Fault in FL as was done in Colorado a few years ago, all under the pretext of "fraud".
While it is true that FL's No-Fault has been riddled with fraud, provider overcharging, schemes and scams, it does not make sense to throw the baby out with the bath water, as the saying goes. While there is also fraud and abuse in the Medicare and other health care systems they do not end the coverage, leaving everyone holding the bag just because of fraud, they increase investigators an prosecute when and where necessary.
We will not know the final outcome for a few more days . In the meantime it appears that anyone with auto insurance set to expire on October 1st will be without coverage until this is settled during Florida 's Special Session set to begin October 3rd. Fee Schedules & increased dollars for fraud investigation are among some of the proposed changes if No-Fault is to be saved.
It has been a difficult year , constantly writing, e-mailing and calling the powers that be to protect our rights and the rights of others trying to maintain services, including massage therapy for the Florida Disabled on the Federal Medicaid Home & Community Based Waiver program, FL No-Fault auto insurance, the prevention of FED's taking away our rights to vitamins, health supplies and services, working with the Coalition to Preserve Patient Access to Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services , etc. etc. Many of you are already familiar with some of these issues from emails you have received.
